Week 1 BLOG: INTRO

To begin I will introduce myself, I am Stephanie an undergraduate in the College of Nursing at USM. My current job title is full-time student and more than full-time mother of two. I have a five year old daughter and a one month old son. I hope to one day be a nurse practitioner working in pediatrics. I enjoy spending time with my family and working on my degree. This course does not contribute to my degree, however, I am hoping to gain some personal experience through this course.
There are all kinds of writing, however, within my major I regularly have to write care plans for my patients when we go to clinical days. When I go to a clinical day we have to document on the computer medical information about our patients. This is considered charting and can be a lengthy summary about the patient’s health. This type of writing is required of me, although, I enjoy writing in my journal. My journal allows me to write down thoughts and feelings from my own perspective of life. When I journal my day or whatever it is I am writing down, I feel like this is positive therapy for me.
Sometimes when I have to write about something I am not interested in I will have a “failing” in my writing. It is as though if I do not enjoy what I am writing about I shut down mentally and creatively. When I write about something I am not interested in, I will usually have someone read over my work before I turn it and a lot of the times the person says it is difficult for them to understand my sentence formation or the point of the overall piece. I believe I have this “failing” because I lose confidence in myself because I do not believe in what I am writing.
This semester I hope to learn how to be able to write in different forms and on demand. I hope to also build my confidence so that I will improve my abilities to communicate through writing. I am a little worried about my ability to complete a lengthy paper. However, I am looking forward to this course and the semester.

  1. I understand what you are talking about when you talk about difficulties writing things that are uninteresting to you. I find I have the same problem. I sometimes find myself staring at the computer screen for hours till the paper comes to me.

  2. I think it's amazing that you're pursuing a degree with two children. That's got to be a challenge. Finding time to write is hard enough; I can't imagine working around a busy schedule with two kids.

I understand what you mean about writing on subjects you don't really connect with. Most of the time I try to get into the material, to look it at it from someone else's point of view and might even try to imagine that I'm writing it for them. Hope that makes some sort of sense.
